Roasted Grape and Camembert Ramekins

Delicious sweet and savoury pots of joy! These nut-topped ramekins filled with camembert and grapes are the perfect Tu B’av treat.

Tu B’Av, the fifteenth day of the Jewish month of Av, is a day of celebration, gladness and rejoicing. It marks the end of the main harvest period, “the day of the breaking of the scythe” (Rav Menashya) and a celebration for the trees. However it also marks the start of the grape harvest, which lasts until Sukkot.

Amongst the many significant historical occurrences of Tu B’Av, this was also the day on which the prohibition on intermarriage between Jewish tribes was lifted and a man from Gad for example could marry a woman from Asher, instead of from within his own tribe, and on this day, the mishna taught: “the daughters of Jerusalem would go out in white clothes, and on the fifteenth of Av they would go out to the vineyards and dance (and select husbands).” (Ta’anit 31a)

The sages teach us that every woman would borrow white garments from another, Why would they all borrow garments? “They did this so as not to embarrass one who did not have her own white garments.”

Today, Tu B’Av is celebrated as a Hebrew Day of Love, and it remains customary for women to choose their spouses on this date. In celebration of the grape harvest and the day of love, we have dressed these roasted grapes in white, silky camembert and served them up in little heart-shaped pots.

A great starter for a milky meal any time through the summer, and a delicious, quick and easy treat.
